FAQ > What documentation is required for the ITIN application?
If you are sending copies of ITIN documents, make sure they are certified copies. Certified copies are supplied directly from the issuing agency that made the original document. The issuing body shall provide a stamped certification showing that the copy is accurate. Certain consulates and embassies abroad may be able to provide certified copies of the necessary ITIN documents. Please contact your desired consulate or embassy to find out if they offer this service.
What do I need to get an ITIN number as a Dependent?
If someone claims you as a dependent and applies for an ITIN, they will have to provide additional documentation to prove that they are a U.S. resident. A passport without an entry date will not be sufficient as an identification document if you are a dependent. You will need to provide certain original documents proving your U.S. address along with your passport according to your age:
- 6-year-old Younger: Medical report with applicant's name and address.
- School records with the applicant's name and address: -between 6 and 18 years of age.
- 18 years of age or older: Rent declaration, utility bills, bank statement, or record the school with the name and address of the applicant.
However, if you are a dependent of someone who is in the military and stationed abroad or you are from Canada or Mexico, you are not required to provide proof of residency.
