In order to apply for an ITIN, you must meet certain requirements. You will need to prove your identification, your alien status, and include certain documents with the ITIN application. Here are all the eligibility requirements and documentation:
The first thing to do is find out if you qualify for an ITIN. You may need to complete an application for an ITIN if it is:
- A person who has to report or file U.S. taxes, but cannot obtain a social security number.
- A nonresident alien who must file a U.S. tax return.
- A resident alien who U.S. must file a U.S. tax return.
- A spouse or dependent of a U.S. resident or alien.
- A spouse or dependent of a visa holder.
If you fit any of these descriptions, you can go ahead with your W7 ITIN application.
You will need an IRS tax return to get an ITIN. While you can submit your application for an ITIN at any time, if it applies after the tax return due date, you may have to pay penalties.
