FAQ > Do I need a passport to obtain an ITIN?
The ITIN application process can be a little confusing for first-time applicants, and no one wants to have to reapply just because of a simple oversight. That's why it's important to know your options for completing the ITIN application, including the options that allow you to obtain your number, even though you don't currently have a passport. The application process requires only three things:
- form -A w-7
- U.S. tax return -A (unless excepted)
- identification documents -Adequate
Options for identification
Your passport is the easiest option to use, as it is the only identification option that does not require a second piece of identification to verify it. If you do not have a passport, or if you currently do not have access to it for any reason, you can also choose from the following options:
- To current national identity card
- Driving licence
- Immigration and Citizenship ID
- State ID
- Birth certificate
- Visa issued by the Secretariat of State
- NOSOTROS. military identification card
- Totally foreign military identification card
- a totally foreign voter's card
Don't forget that you will also have your tax return, unless you qualify for one of the ITIN exceptions. Once you have an ITIN, you will need to fill out a W4 form so that your federal tax can be withheld.
Where can I get a W4 form?
The W4 form is the way to fill out with an employer to make sure you have withholding taxes on how to set up. Most employers will provide a form to themselves, but you can also download one from the IRS website if necessary.
